More and more in the Studio we are hearing “green” from our clients. Not only do they want a beautiful product, but, a beautiful product with a conscious. And this can be a great challenge for the designer especially with a high-end client. It can be simple to reclaim, reuse and “green” it up for the low and mid-level clients, but when designers are faced with a heavy-hitter the options become few.

The Bazzèo collection provides a green solution for the lux kitchen and bath client and…

will give A-listers,celebrities and industry movers and shakers a personalized green choice, rather than the cookie-cutter, euro-kitchens that currently dominate the luxury kitchen market. Building the kitchens from the ground up as well as one at a time, will give Bazzèo more latitude with their design styling and material selection, a welcomed change from the ridged and limited matrix now offered from other companies.
With less waste during the manufacturing process as well as an extensive selection of ecosensitive materials to choose from, Bazzèo is leading the way in sustainable kitchen manufacturing. The bazzèo kitchen can be designed for a green environment without compromising on design.

For Sale: The Earliest Modern Studio in America : Observatory: Design Observer.

In 1931, a young American artist designed and built himself a modern studio on a mountaintop in the Berkshires in Northwest Connecticut: it would be one of the first modern houses in America, pre-dating Frank Lloyd’s Fallingwater by five years.

From Design Observer comes this notice of a truly modern home for sale. And wouldn’t we want to live here! Shades of HERCULE POIROT and a grand life of Painter, Muralist, Illustrator - Ezra Winter, b. 1886 d. 1949.

There are many challenges to those who wish to call the Gulf Coast home.

Living on a barrier island, as we do here on Galveston Island, amplifys those challenges but the rewards are great. If you choose to live in an historic or antique house, those challenges and rewards are further amplified. My home is 125 years in the making and I can certainly attest and appreciate both the challenges and the rewards that come with curating an antique home. And there are many such homes on our island.

Galveston Historical Foundation is showing the way to ‘greening’ our houses of the past and leading us all into the 21st Century and our modern ways of living.

Kudos to GHF for this most excellent ‘save’ of a home that was devastated by Hurricane Ike in 2008.

Below is a recent article appearing in our local Coast magazine from the Galveston County Daily News.

Renovation and remodel of the Thompson Mosley house originally designed by Buff, Straub & Hensman in 1959. While the main structure and floor plan retains its essential integrity, a new “interior core” is inserted along the central spine of the house. This new hub is accentuated by natural materials which compliment the interior connections to the outdoor spaces defined by the pinwheel plan of the residence.

Everything in its place…

having the perfect cooking appliance and the perfect fresh food storage items out of the way (and probably half of; OK, over half of a descent budget spent), I will now address all the furniture for the perfect kitchen of my dream.

This is probably the next greatest expense; although I suspect that some spend the bulk of their budgets on cabinets than on anything else.  We spend a great deal of money to hide everything away, which is fine if you spend a great deal of time passing through your kitchen, but I prefer to spend time IN my kitchen.  So, I am not so sure that spending a great deal of money to hide all my stuff is appropriate, for me anyway.  Who needs the traditional kitchen cabinet?  We think there are alternatives to the boring look of the traditional American kitchen:  Think of your kitchen as another room to furnish with armoires, cases and tables.

There are some really great ways to make a working kitchen look pleasing and yet, still be a working kitchen.

A few years back we found these wonderful cases and saved them for inspiration.

French Cabinets

Envision a wall of these, built to accommodate your largest pot or serving piece with glass or better yet, copper screening. Personally we like being able to see what we are looking for (who has time in a busy kitchen to remember: “Where did I store that pot or platter?).

So many options! Take the time and think outside of the ordinary kitchen for storage solutions… have fun; live, work, play!

Summer House

Get Ready for Summer

Concrete house from BAK Arquitectos:  We just love the way this “man-made” structure blends into the woodland setting becoming part of the landscape.  On first look, it appears to be built of weathered planks but is entirely concrete.  Reminiscent of those structures found in state parks we spent vacations at during child hood.  Lovely simplicity with urban elegance.  We could move in tomorrow.

Continuing with our dream kitchen, we move to the next most important element:  fresh storage (refrigeration).

And this is my vote for the best:

Along with a couple of drawer units placed in strategic locations and of course a Sub-Zero Wine Storage unit:

And you have it all.
